Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain

Title of the conference: Ethylene Oligomerization on Ni-Zeolite Catalysts: Probing the Nature of Active Ni Sites by Combining Reaction Kinetics with in situ Time-Resolved FTIR Spectroscopy

Agustín Martínez was born in Alzira (Valencia) in 1961 and received the degree in Chemistry at the University of Valencia in 1984. His Ph.D. studies were performed at the Instituto de Catálisis y Petroleoquímica (ICP-CSIC) in Madrid under the guidance of Prof. Avelino Corma in the subject of zeolite catalysts for catalytic cracking. He received the Ph.D. degree in 1990. During the period of 1980-1990 he was working in the Research Centre of the refining company CEPSA in Madrid, where he acquired industrial experience in different refining and petrochemical processes. In 1991 he joined the group of Prof. Corma where he obtained a permanent position at the Instituto de Tecnología Química (ITQ) in Valencia. In 2009 he was promoted to Full Research Professor of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).

In the ITQ he was initially engaged in different research projects aiming at developing more efficient and environmentally-friendly heterogeneous catalysts for producing fine chemicals via selective liquid-phase oxidations, petrochemicals (transformation of alkylaromatics), and clean-burning fuels through different catalytic processes including isoparaffin/olefin alkylation, olefin and paraffin isomerizations, hydrocracking, aromatics hydrogenation, and selective ring-opening of naphthenes. In 2000 he was awarded with the National CSIC-Volkswagen Prize for Young Researchers (under 40) by his outstanding contributions in the field of environmentally-friendly automotive fuels.

Since 2000 his main research interests were focused in the study of heterogeneous catalysts for the conversion of natural gas (methane) and biomass via synthesis gas (syngas) to clean fuels, including second-generation biofuels (i.e diesel via Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis, bio-ethanol, and bio-dimethyl ether). Current research topics also include the development of catalysts for the catalytic hydrogenation of CO2.

Agustín Martínez has leaded as principal researcher 8 national and 3 european projects and has participated in different R&D contracts with major chemical-refining companies, among which Repsol (Spain), Eni (Italy), IFP (France), ICI (UK), Rhodia (France), Conoco-Philips (USA), Lurgi (Germany), Petrobras (Brasil), and Abengoa Biotechnology (Spain) are worth to be mentioned. He is co-author of about 110 articles published in peer-reviewed reputed international SCI journals and more than 10 chapters in international scientific books and encyclopedias. The scientific relevance of his investigations is shown by the more of 5000 citations received, with an h-index of 42. Moreover, he is also co-inventor of 12 patents and has about 120 contributions in international congresses and meetings, including several plenary lectures and keynotes.

At present, he is member of the International Advisory Board of the research centre UniCRE in the Czech Republic, and of the Editorial Board of the Advanced Porous Materials journal (American Scientific Publishers).
